(WFXG) - FOX54 brings you continuing local coverage as Hurricane Ian pounds coastal Florida and makes its way into the southeastern US.

Georgia Insurance Commissioner John King shares some advice as you make preparations for the threat of damages in the CSRA.

People do not always get advance warnings of major emergencies, but you still have time to prepare ahead of potentially severe weather this week.

King acknowledges some things cannot be replaced; anything of sentimental value is best secured in a waterproof and fireproof safe, such as one at a bank. Many important documents can be stored electronically.

For everything else, many of your high-value items are probably insured. Before severe weather strikes, King suggests taking photos and videos of your home and property to establish its current condition.

"It's important to document," he says, "Photographs and videos are incredibly valuable in the process and filing of a claim."

Something else you should do ahead of a storm, King explains, is knowing your policy.

"Review your policy," he suggests, "before catastrophe is the time to ask your agent anything you want to know about your coverage."

Should you find yourself dealing with damage after the storm has passed, Commissioner King warns, do not let the shock factor cloud your judgment. Be aware of potential scams and know how to reach your insurance agent or the commissioner’s office should you need any help with your policy or claims.
