CHICAGO — Digital gamers who used Biotrue Hydration Boost Lubricant Eye Drops over a 7-day period reported in a survey that the drops helped relieve stressed eyes and helped their eyes feel comfortable throughout the day.

The Bausch + Lomb-sponsored study involving 183 gamers and 545 non-gamers was presented during a virtual poster session for Optometry’s Meeting. Bausch’s executive director of medical affairs for vision care, William Reindel, OD, discussed the study results with Healio.

“The gaming population is expected to reach 179 million,” Reindel said. “They use digital devices very intensely, and their favorite gaming device now is their mobile phone.”

All study participants used Bausch + Lomb’s new Biotrue Hydration Boost Lubricant Eye Drops at least once a day for 7 days. The gamers in the study played 2 or more hours a day.

Gamers were significantly more likely than non-gamers to say that the drops helped relieve stressed eyes, helped eyes feel comfortable throughout the day and calmed stressed, dry eyes due to screen usage (P < 0.05), according to the study. The two groups similarly responded that the drops provided instant moisture/hydration and helped hydrate tired eyes (P < 0.05).

Reindel also discussed another company-sponsored study that evaluated the disinfection power of the recently introduced Biotrue Hydration Plus Multi-Purpose Solution. The new product contains three antimicrobial agents “at very low concentrations, and practitioners may have an interest in how safe they are,” he said.

Researchers randomized 127 participants to the Biotrue arm and 125 to another solution containing a single disinfectant and single surfactant. Participants wore one of five different silicone hydrogel lenses or one hydrogel contact lens and used the solutions over the course of 3 months.

“We had visits at 2 weeks, 1 month and 3 months,” Reindel said. “To evaluate safety, we looked at the slit lamp exam.

“Our estimate in terms of amount of exposure was over 2,300 exposures to Biotrue and over 2,300 exposures to the other product, with 498 eye exams associated with Biotrue, and 488 exams associated with the other product,” he added.

Reindel said that no grade 3 or 4 findings were seen for either of the two products.

“There was no statistical difference in findings between the two products when you’re looking at no findings, trace and grade 1; there were no corneal infiltrates; and no serious adverse events,” he said. “From a safety standpoint, Biotrue performed similarly to a product that only has one microbial agent and one surfactant,” Reindel concluded.
